Our Journey into Quail Farming
Welcome to McQuailerton Farms! We’re thrilled to have you here as we embark on this exciting adventure in quail farming. Our farm is nestled in the peaceful countryside, where the serene environment and our passion for sustainable farming practices come together to create a haven for our beloved quails.
The Beginning
Our journey began with a simple dream: to nurture a small flock of quail that could provide fresh, wholesome eggs for our family and friends. With an initial investment of $880, we set up our farm, equipped with brooders, layer pens, and grow-out pens. The adventure truly took flight when our first flock, Flock 1, hatched on May 6, 2024.
Growing Our Flock
As we watched those tiny chicks emerge from their shells, we knew we were onto something special. Flock 1 quickly grew under our careful watch, moving from the cozy warmth of the brooder to the spacious layer pens at just three weeks old. Our son Grady, full of energy and curiosity, named each chick, forming a special bond with a Rosetta quail he called John Cena. This playful interaction became a cherished daily routine, strengthening the bond between Grady and our feathered friends.
Expanding Our Farm
In June 2024, we welcomed Flock 2 and Flock 3 to McQuailerton Farms. Flock 2 hatched on June 8 and 9, bringing a delightful mix of white, white wings, and wild jumbos. Among them was Joseph, a chick with a unique round dot on his head, named by Grady. Flock 3 consists of five 16-week-old hens we bought from Wendy Thompson, each marked with a leg band. These additions have enriched our farm, allowing us to expand our egg production and share more of our fresh, delicious eggs with you.
Daily Life on the Farm
Life on the farm is a blend of routine and joy. Each day, we ensure our flocks have adequate food and water, clean their living spaces, and manage light schedules to optimize egg production. Our dedication to maintaining a hygienic and healthy environment for our quails is unwavering. Recently, we transitioned Flock 1 to layer feed, ensuring they receive the best nutrition to support their egg-laying.
Maintaining Balance and Harvesting
To maintain a healthy balance in our flock, we regularly harvest excess roosters. This practice not only ensures a peaceful environment for our hens but also provides us with a valuable source of protein. We love knowing that the food on our table is sustainably produced right here on our farm. Eating the quail we raise adds a sense of fulfillment and connection to our food that we cherish deeply.
